SAVE OUR SEEDS!
Take direct action to defend our right to food!

These updates made on January 29, 2012

Organic gardening and seed saving could be one of the most important projects of Food Not Bombs - Start your Food Not Lawns Community Garden this spring and create your own local Seed Bank. Even though this can be considered a crime we must take this chance to save the food supply for our community. We are providing several links at the bottom where you can buy non-GMO seeds. Please do all you can to buy and cultivate as many of these seeds this year and start your own seed bank. Since we first set up this website we have found it is becoming more difficult to buy safe seeds and it could be nearly impossible obtain these seeds in the near future.

SAVING OUR SEEDS
MILLIONS AGAINST MONSANTO

Hugh Grant, Brett Begemann, Consuelo E. Madere and a handful of Monsanto directors have near total control of the world's food supply. They share this control with the directors of a few other corporations like Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill, and Tyson Foods. We didn't elect them. Most of us have never heard of these people yet we are trusting them with our future. If allowed to continue their policies could lead to a global famine and the starvation of millions. While their control of seeds have already caused the price of food to increase so much if has forced over a billion people go hungry each day their genetically engineered food may also launch an epidemic of diseases or lead to the extinction of important crops such as corn, rice and wheat. The cost of seeds and the chemicals required for cultivation are driving millions of farmers into bankruptcy. Corn seed prices rose 32 percent and soybean seeds were up 24 percent in 2009. We now believe that Monsanto has control over as much as 90% of (seed genetics). This level of control is almost unbelievable," said Neil Harl, agricultural economist at Iowa State University who has studied the seed industry for decades. "The upshot of that is that it's tightening Monsanto's control, and makes it possible for them to increase their prices long term. And we've seen this happening the last five years, and the end is not in sight.

Monsanto is not only buying a huge percentage of the world's seeds they are forcing geneticly engineered seeds on the world. Geneticly engeneered seeds require activator chemicals and other expensive products forcing the cost of farming out of reach of millions. Thousands of farmers have gone bankrupt trying to pay for these products. Many other farmers are being driven off their land by because of law suits by Monsanto. Farmers caught growing their own seed crops or discovered growing plants contaminated by Monsanto's produces have been forced to stop cultivating safe organic food after facing expensive legal battles. Hundreds of farmers have committed suicide when faced with loosing their family farms.

Activator genes may activate more then the genetic information in Monsanto's products but have been seen to activiate genetic illness in animals and people. Activator genes from a long grain rice experiment activated lucemia in over 50 children outside a lab in Texas. Dr. Lorrin Pang and other leading scientists in the field of Genetic Engeneering are calling on a global ban on research, development and the cultivation of these products. ( Please listen to his presentation.) As the price of food increases the nutritional value and safty of our food is decreasing. So we are getting lower quality food but we are paying more. In the past five years alone, the U.S. government has handed out more than $95 billion in agricultural subsidies to companies like Monsanto. If this were not bad enough Monsanto's Terminator Genes could wipe out the ability to grow many staples. We truly face a global crisis of famine and desease.

Obama has appointed a number of Monanto officials and supporters to important areas of his administration. Best known is the Food Safety Leader Michael Taylor was appointed to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Taylor was the Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto from 1998 until 2001. He lead the effort to stop the labeling of GMO food. Obama also appointed Monsanto supporter Tom Vilsack to Secretary Agriculture. While govenor of Iowa he introduced laws promoting policies to back Monsanto. In 2005 he supported and signed Iowa bill HF 642 making it illegal for local governments to block the culitivation of GMO crops. The Obama Administration also formed an new section of the Department of Agriculture, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and appointed Roger Beachy the president of Monsanto's non-profit research unit Danforth Plant Science Center to head the agency. Obama's director of the federal food aid organization USAID is Rajiv Shah former head of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's agricultural programs unit working with Monsanto to encourage the dumping of GMO seeds in Africa and other areas of the world facing hunger. Obama announced the recess appoint of Islam A. Siddiqui to the position of Chief Agricultural Negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Siddiqui is a pesticide lobbyist and Vice President for Science and Regulatory Affairs at CropLife America, an agribusiness lobbying group that represents Monsanto. It is easy to see that Obama is very supportive of Monsanto and corporate control of our food. It seems that the organic garden at the White House was designed to redirect attention away from the presidents real policy of promoting industrial agriculture.

Please find out more on how this is a threat to our food security from one of the world's leading experts on the issue, Jean Ziegler United Nations Commission for Human Rights special rapporteur for the right to food.
Hunger Is a Weapon of Mass Destruction

A new threat to the right to cultivate and save crops free of GMO's is becoming law all over the world. Monsanto and other seed companies consider the harvesting and cultivation of seeds theft or their property. Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is providing a global legal structure claims you could be accused of counterfeiting one of Monsanto's products by planting seeds you have collected from your own garden. Obama signed the treaty in October 2011. Legal experts believe that international treaties have to be voted on by the Senate but for some reason he found that he would rather just agree to the treaty with out following the U.S. Consititution.

Food Not Bombs can take an important role in this campain to protect the world from famine. Food Not Bombs can join in the grassroots effort to defend our right to safe nutritous food. Every Food Not Bombs chapter can start a local seed bank, teach your community how to grow it's own food and provide information about this global crisis. Organize campaigns to ban Monsanto products and all geneticly engineers organisims from your communities. Please visit these sites to learn more about this threat to our future and how your Food Not Bombs group can impliment sucessful solutions.

Plant this years Food Not Lawns community garden and encourage your Food Not Bombs chaper to start a seed bank this fall! Organize events and hand out information about this urgent issue.

GET YOUR NON-GMO SEEDS AND START YOUR OWN SEED BANK Please visit these sites and consider buying as many seeds as your Food Not Lawns community garden can use. They need our support and we need to start our own seed banks this year before it becomes impossible. As the economy continues to fail more people are coming to Food Not Bombs to find food and hope. We can continue to provide this support if we encourage the cultivation of Food Not Lawns community gardens and do all we can to collect our seeds. We are starting the Food Not Bombs Free Skool in Taos, New Mexico to help teach organic gardening and other organizing skills. Please call us at 1-800-884-1136 if you need help.
